ABOUT US
What is Unity?
Unity is a loving, joy-filled spiritual community which embraces every person as an expression of God. Though rooted in the Bible, Unity respects the universal Truths expressed in other traditions and seeks to find the common threads in Eastern and Western teachings.
Our purpose is to provide an environment in which you are able to focus on your spiritual Self in an atmosphere of friendship and caring. We are committed to creating inspiring, practical and life-transforming Sunday services, weekly seminars, workshops and retreats to assist you in enhancing the spiritual connection with yourself and others.
The Unity movement was founded by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore in 1889, when Myrtle healed herself of a life-threatening illness using Unity's 5 Basic Tenets.
History of Unity Church of Hilton Head Island
Unity began on Hilton Head Island in the mid-1990s with a handful of aspirants eager to study spiritual principles together. From its humble beginning in a yoga studio, the energy of the movement grew steadily until in 1999 the group became incorporated as Unity Church of Hilton Head Island.
Elizabeth McGinnis often spoke of spiritual things to the clients at her spa. Upon their requests, she began teaching classes on Sunday evenings which approximately fifteen people attended. After being approached about starting a Unity church, Elizabeth held a meeting for all those interested. In September 1999, the Unity Church of Hilton Head Island was founded and Gervai Phillips was hired as the minister. The congregation met in a yoga studio for a few months. In August of 2001, Ruth Wallace was hired as the new minister. The congregation was meeting at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club. In December of 2002, Mark Pope served as an interim minister. In July of 2003, Lance Livesay was hired and served until January 2004. At that time, the congregation was meeting in a business park on Bow Circle. Laura Hartley served as the interim minister until September of 2004 when Justin Epstein was hired. In April of 2005, the congregation began holding services at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, where they remained until October 2006 when they moved to their current location at The Quality Inn & Suites.
